What Are Barcode and QR Coded Seals For?

What do barcode and QR do on a seal?
When an operator manually enters an eight- or ten-digit serial number, characters can be skipped or transposed. Scanning reduces this risk by sending the physical code directly to WMS, TMS, ERP or a dedicated tracking application, making application and handover verification faster.
GS1's traceability approach combines identification, data capture and sharing. The same logic applies to security seals: define a unique identity, capture it through barcode/QR and link it to a process event in the system. The code by itself is not a traceability system.

Frequently asked questions
Is a barcoded seal more secure?
It is not automatically mechanically stronger. The barcode strengthens recording and verification by capturing identity quickly and accurately.
Can a QR code contain the serial number?
Yes. The serial can be encoded directly, or the code can carry a secure URL linked to the serial.
Is a GS1 barcode mandatory?
Not automatically for every seal application. Internal serial tracking can use an organization's own coding structure; GS1 standards and partner requirements should be evaluated where commercial/interoperable identification is needed.
Why does a QR code sometimes fail to scan?
Insufficient size, low contrast, poor printing, curvature, glare, damage or an unsuitable reader can reduce scan performance.
Should barcode and human-readable serial appear together?
It is useful in many operations. Manual verification remains possible if the scanner fails, and scanned data can be compared with the visible number.
