What is an RFID Seal?

An RFID seal adds a radio-frequency-readable electronic identity to a physical security seal. RFID can allow the seal's serial or electronic identity to be captured without contact and, depending on the technology, without direct line of sight; however, an RFID seal does not automatically provide GPS tracking, internet connectivity or real-time tamper alerts. Those capabilities depend on the tag, sensors, reader and overall system architecture.

What problem does RFID solve on a seal?
With a conventional numbered seal, an operator reads the serial visually or scans a barcode/QR. With RFID, a suitable reader can capture the electronic identity over radio. This can reduce manual data entry and automate identification at high-volume gates, cages, assets or container movements.
RFID does not describe one universal product behavior. A passive tag may draw energy from the reader, while an active system can use its own power source for different read and sensor scenarios. Frequency, antenna, metal surfaces, orientation and environment affect performance. Procurement should therefore define system parameters, not merely require 'RFID'.

What is an RFID seal?
It is a physical security seal enhanced with an electronically readable radio-frequency identity or data capability.
Can an RFID seal be tracked remotely?
It depends on architecture. Conventional passive RFID is read within suitable reader range and is not by itself a cellular/GPS tracking system. Active solutions may provide different capabilities.
Does RFID work on a metal container?
It can, but metal can strongly affect antenna performance. Tag design, spacing/placement, orientation and reader antennas should be tested on the actual container.
Should an RFID seal also have a visible serial number?
It is useful in many field operations. A visible serial allows manual verification if the electronic reader fails and enables physical/digital identity comparison.
Is GS1 RFID mandatory?
Not automatically for every internal seal application. Where interoperability across trading partners is required, standards such as GS1/EPC can be evaluated for suitability.
